The 14th International Conference on Precision Agriculture
organised by the International Society of Precision Agriculture (ISPA)took place on June 24-27, 2018 in Montreal, Canada.

Xinbing Wang, ICASD PhD student, received the ISPA Outstanding Graduate Student Award.

in Beijing, China

2016, June

Field Campaigns in Lishu and Jiansanjiang, Northeast China

In late June, scientists from the UK, Israel and Germany visited the Science and Technology Backyard of Lishu. The group was especially interested in the Precision Maize Management Experiments conducted by ICASD. At the same time, field campaigns in Lishu and Jiansanjiang started and the students carried out various field measurements. Leaf sensing, canopy sensing and UAV-based low altitude sensing data were collected.

2016, June

Sino-Norwegian Cooperative Project: Mid-term Project Meeting

The Sino-Norwegian Cooperative Project "Innovative technologies to assure sustainable grain production in China with reduced environmental footprint" had its mid-term meeting in Beijing, from June 8 to 9, 2016. The ICASD members Dr. Audun Korsæth and Dr. Yuxin Miao lead workpackage I, focusing on improving crop N use efficiency. This workpackage involves research teams at the Nanjing Agicultural University and the Xinjiang Academy of Agricultural Science, in addition teams at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy and the China Agricultural University. This workpackage has made great progress, which impressed the project leaders and participants.

2016, April

Prof. W.D. Batchelor visited ICASD at the China Agricultural University

Prof. W.D. Batchelor from the Auburn University (Alabama, USA) visited ICASD at the China Agricultural University from April 11 to 20. He trained the graduate students on using DSSAT crop growth models to analyze their research data. This year, remote sensing and crop growth model-based precision maize management systems are evaluated in Lishu, Jilin Province. Prof. Batchelor is an expert in crop growth modelling, and close cooperation is developed between the Auburn University and the CAU.

2015, July

Sino-UK Newton AgriTech Project

The kickoff meeting of the Sino-UK Newton AgriTech Project “Remote Sensing for Sustainable Intensification in China through Improved Farm Decision-Making” was held from July 2nd to 6th in Changchun, Jilin Province. The participants visited the Research Sites and the Science and Technology Backyards in Lishu. The UK participants also visited the CAU Jiansanjiang Experimental Station and the Science and Technology Backyard. Dr. John Crawford from Rothamsted Research presents the UK PI and Dr. Yuxin Miao from the CAU presents the Chinese PI within this project.

ICASD field campaigns 2015

Starting in April, a new series of field measurements was conducted in Quzhou, Hebei Province, China.

Crop growth in irrigated wheat fields of the Quzhou Experimental Station (China Agricultural University, Beijing) is investigated.
From the University of Cologne (Germany), the former ICASD PhD student Dr. Juliane Bendig and student assistant Lars Gruenhagen monitored crop growth using an UAV (equipped with RGB and thermal sensors) and a field spectrometer.

2015, June

Lishu Research Site

Dr. Raj Khosla (Colorado State University, USA) visited the Lishu Research Site with Dr. Fei Yuan (Minnesota State University, USA) and Dr. Yuxin Miao (China Agricultural University) on June 8th and 9th, 2015. Lishu is a new ICASD research site for precision maize management research started in 2015.

Dr. Khosla gave a presentation on “Precision Management of Nutrients, Water & Seeds: A Holistic Approach” at the departmental seminar in the evening of June 9th, and also gave a presentation on “Climate Smart Precision Agriculture for Small Scale Farming Systems” at the Food Security Forum on June 10th.

Sino-US Workshop on Precision Agriculture
at the China Agricultural University in Beijing, China

Aim of the workshop was the presentation of the newest research results in Precision Agriculture, both in China and in the US. Additionally, the participants visited the CAU Quzhou Experiment Station, the Science and Technology Small Yard (STSY), some demonstration fields, farmers' fields as well as agricultural industries (seed, fertilizer, market, etc.) in Quzhou, Hebei Province.

Workshop on Remote Sensing Methods for Change Detection and Process Modelling
at the University of Cologne, Germany

Aim of the workshop was the presentation of various remote sensing methods in the context of interdisciplinary research. 

The workshop was organized by the

  • ISPRS Working Group VII/5 (Methods for Change Detection and Process Modelling) and co-organized by the
  • CRC Transregio 32 (Patterns in Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Systems: Monitoring, Modelling and Data Assimilation),
  • CRC 806 (Our Way To Europe: Culture-Environment Interaction and Human Mobility in the Late Quaternary),
  • CROP.SENSe.net (Networking Sensor Technology R&D for Crop Breeding and Management), and
  • ICASD (International Center for Agro-Informatics and Sustainable Development).

Participants were invited to contribute posters and papers for the conference proceedings, related to following topics:

  • remote sensing for soil/plant/atmosphere systems
  • remote and close range sensing for (geo)archaeology
  • remote and close range sensing for crop production

ICASD Workshop on Investigating Agro-ecosystems
in Beijing and Jiansanjiang, China

The workshop  took place at the China Agricultural University in Beijing.
During the workshop, the new office for the International Center for Agro-Informatics and Sustainable Development (ICASD) in Beijing was officially opened.
Additionally, the participants visited the new experimental station in Quzhou (Hebei Province) and the rice experimental station in Jiansanjiang (Heilongjiang Province).

Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding

On November the 17th, the rector of the University of Cologne, Prof. Axel Freimuth and  delegates, signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the president of the China Agricultural University (CAU), Ke Bingsheng, initiating the International Center for Agro-Informatics and Sustainable Development (ICASD).

Joint PhD candidate Kang Yu arrived

The first CAU-Cologne joint PhD candidate Kang Yu arrived today in Cologne. He will stay at Prof. Dr. Bareth's GIS & Remote Sensing Group for the next four years to pursue his PhD degree in Geoinformatics.

CAU delegation visits the GIS & RS group of the University of Cologne

Dr. Yuxin Miao and PhD candidate Yinkun Yao from the College of Resources and Environmental Sciences of the China Agricultural University arrived in Cologne on November 2nd. They visit Prof. Dr. Bareth's GIS & Remote Sensing Group for a whole month to work on the establishment of ICASD, data analysis and publications.
